Liner Notes
Rattex is back with a banging EP that cements his place as one of South Africa’s foremost hip hop talents. With production by Hipe, Dplanet and a special remix by Swiss electro-dub band Filewile, expect more kasi fire straight from the dusty streets of Khayelitsha.
This is Rattex’s first release since his debut solo album, Bread and Butter. Rattex has just returned from an extensive European tour that saw him tear up stages at an impressive list of Festivals including Paleo Festival (CH), Electron Festival (CH), Fusion Festival (DE), B-Sides Festival (CH) and JazzParade (CH). Most of the EP was recorded at Red Bull Studios in Cape Town – big up Ivan, Steve, Richard and Jake. Sikubo was recorded at Wankdorf Studios in Berne, Switzerland while Rattex was on tour – big up Daniel, Andreas and the whole Filewile crew.
The digital EP comes with an extended artwork pack (PDF) designed by spo0ky. It also includes 2 acapellas for all the DJs and remixers out there. Although this is primarily a digital release, a limited number of CDs will be available at The African Music Store and via mail order.

Press
“Aggressive, driving and doesn’t stray into fancy whimsical tangents to make it more commercial”
- Mail&Guardian (December 3-9, 2010)
“If you don’t understand isiXhosa, you’re going to miss the minutiae of his message, but you won’t mistake his delivery as anything but angry and committed.”
- Mail&Guardian (December 3-9, 2010)
“The remix of Let’s Move by Swiss electro-dub dudes Filewile, is a winner, adding a bright underpinning to the original’s dirty mix.”
- Mail&Guardian (December 3-9, 2010)
“I can’t recommend the new Rattex album enough. ‘Streets, Raps & Us’ is intense.”
- Chris Roper, Mail&Guardian (via Twitter)
“The new Rattex, “Streets, Raps & Us”, is killer. Beats that deserve to, well, beat. And some committed danceability.”
- Chris Roper, Mail&Guardian (via Twitter)
“This level of militancy, this gut-feel, ‘say-it-how-I-see-it’ type of stance is becoming increasingly rare in hip-hop.”
- Biz-ark-human
“A sense of urgency is almost palpable throughout the EP, serving as the bedrock onto which Rah demonstrates several par-excellence displays of lyrical fitness.”
- Biz-ark-human
“Dplanet and Hipe step up to the challenge by dishing out couture musical delicacies.”
- Biz-ark-human
“Rattex may be angry, but he is directing that anger – perhaps a feeling of being let down by mainstream media as can be heard on ‘Ewe nje’, coupled with the sorry state that the entire world is in both socially and economically – towards the fully-formed creative masterpiece that is ‘Streets, raps and us’”.
