Hipe

Bio
Wayne Lee Robertson, better known as Hipe, was born and raised in Ravensmead, Cape Town. His love of music began at the tender age of 12. Hipe’s classic sample-based boom bap style and impeccable sense of composition quickly made him one of Cape Town’s most respected underground hip hop producers.

Hipe was one of the founding members of Cellblock for whom he also produced in early 1995. His first release came in 1997 when he produced a compilation album called, The Detonator, that showcased artists from all over the Cape Flats.

In 2002, Hipe wrote music for a documentary called, Tomorrow’s Heroes, that featured the late Mr. Devious, Godessa and Cellblock. He also produced the music for a TV advert featuring the late Mr. Fat of Brasse Vannie Kaap. More recently, Hipe created the soundtrack for Mario and the Rude Boys, a documentary about a reformed gangster who started a football academy to try to keep at-risk kids off the streets.

In 2000, Hipe formed the group, Ancient Men, for which he was both producer and rapper. Hipe produced their entire debut full-length album which was released in 2005. The Food of Life, which is widely regarded as a South African underground classic, spawned the hit single, Sum Day.

Today Hipe is one of the most prominent and sought-after producers in South Africa. After a period as the in-house producer at Unreleased Records, Hipe signed to Pioneer Unit Records in 2009. He has worked with the cream of South African hip hop including Driemanskap, Rattex, Ben Sharpa, Jaak, Imbube, Zubz, Young Nations, Teargas, Proverb, Nemza and Tumi, as well as a host of international artists such as John Robinson (US) and Mode9 (Nigeria).
