Riots In The Jungle - SKIP&DIE

SKIP & DIE, a genre-blending band formed by South African vocalist & visual artist Catarina Aimée Dahms (aka Cata.Pirata) and Dutch musician & producer Jori Collignon, recently releasing their debut album, ‘Riots In The Jungle’ on Crammed Discs.

The album was written by Cata.Pirata and Jori while they travelled through South Africa’s Soweto, Johannesburg, Cape Town and Gugulethu, collaborating along the way with some of SA’s most inspiring music makers on the rise. The album portrays their experience of blazing sun, dusty roads, township shacks, cockroaches, skulls, bones and lovebirds. It contains songs in English, Afrikaans, Xhosa, Zulu, Spanish and Portuguese. Cape Town’s very own, Driemanskap, feature on ‘Lihlwempu Lomlungu’.

Jukebox Sessions 003 at Ragazzi: Video

Chilling at Jukebox Sessions

We had a great time at the third instalment of Jukebox Sessions at Ragazzi on Saturday night. Despite the poor quality of the sound system, the performances were on point and Kritsi held down hosting duties with his usual sense of humour that had the lively crowd in stitches all night.

Jukebox Sessions is a regular event started by Driemanskap to showcase the best in Cape Town hip hop. Spaza is heavily represented which is great to see. Jukebox Sessions could well become a classic event in Cape Town because Driemanskap have created a ‘family’ environment – it feels like a party at a friend’s house. The fact that we’re heading into winter and the people are already supporting in impressive numbers shows the appeal of the event.

If you want to experience Cape Town hip hop at its most raw, exciting and fun, make sure you don’t miss the next Jukebox Session. The parties are advertised on Facebook so don’t miss out.

Check out video of some of the performances…

Ben Sharpa Portrait by Krijn Van Noordwijk

Ben Sharpa by Krijn van Noordwijk

This photo of Ben was taken by Dutch photographer, Krijn van Noordwijk, in Eindhoven at the Extrema Festival.

Krijn is working on a book called DJ that will feature portraits of various artists who have been performing on the European festival circuit.

The two sample copies of the book Krijn has made so far contain strikingly beautiful portraits that capture the personality of the artists with amazing intensity. His portrait of Chuck D is one of the best I have ever seen!

Hype [Feb 07] - CD - KONFAB & Ben Sharpa

Konfab’s track ‘Next Statement’ is featured on this month’s free CD that comes with Hype magazine. This track is from KONFAB’s forthcoming album ‘Swart Gevaar’ and features Ben Sharpa. A little taste of the ruggedness to come.

“Before you walk the streets of the Mother City, you better know the anthem, straight up!… this collaboration with Ben Sharpa is for all you notty-headed Hip Hop fiends.”

Look out for Hype magazine in an outlet near you!
