Jaak featured on the BBC’s Africa Beats

Jaak on Africa Beat on the BBC

In September 2012 Jaak shot an episode of Africa Beats, a series of short films shot by the BBC that exposes up and coming talent from the African continent. The episode featuring Jaak recently aired on BBC World and is placed permanently on the BBC website.

In this episode, Jaak talks about reclaiming the Afrikaans language for black and brown people, so they can take pride in it, rather than being ashamed of its association with the former oppressors. He also performs an acoustic version of ’63,000′, a track from his forthcoming album, ‘Galant’, which vividly describes how his slave ancestors were brought to the Cape. Jaak is joined by Tebz (violin), Jonette (vocals) and Nossie (drums).

Jaak’s second album, ‘Galant’, will be out later this year. Stay tuned for more information.

Cape Town Effects live at Les Abattoirs | Photos

The Cape Town Effects team spent 8 days in residence at Les Abattoirs in Bourgoin-Jallieu, a small town near Lyon, France. During that time the team, consisting of KONFAB, El Nino (Driemanskap), Jaak, Tebz, Big Space, spo0ky, Dplanet, FX (lighting technician) and Chris (sound engineer), rehearsed and prepared for their first two shows.

The ‘Cape Town Effects’ project aims to create a snapshot of the South African underground music scene by creating a live show and releasing an album – a beautiful way for Jarring Effects to celebrate 10 years of musical connection with Cape Town.

Putting together a full show in such a short time was quite an achievement but everyone worked hard and the results showed. Check out these photos taken by Hélène Mejza at the first show in Bourgoin-Jallieu.

Ben Sharpa & Pure Solid feature on JFX Bits #5

JFX Bits #5

After releasing and touring their ‘4th Density Light Show‘ (4DLS) project, Ben Sharpa and Pure Solid once again collaborate on an electro-bass hip hop track featuring Ben’s sister, Tebz, which has come out today on JFX Bits #5.

French independent label, Jarring Effects, have been putting out their ‘JFX Bits’ compilations for 5 years now. They feature a wide array of hip hop, dubstep and electronic productions by some of their favourite artists. Available as an exclusively digital download, the ‘Bits’ concept was brought about to help uncover and expose artists whose work often goes under the mainstream radar and therefore doesn’t get the attention it deserves.

JFX Bits is always free to download, but that is not a reflection of the quality of the music, or the work that has gone into it. 30 artists, 2 art directors, a graphic designer and a sound engineer worked for several months to realise this project.

You are welcome to download the project for free, or you can make a donation if you wish. You can also increase your involvement by sharing the download link with your network of friends and family.

New: Izulu Lelam by Driemanskap | Video

October 28, 2012 Free MP3, Music, Video No Comments

On Friday, SABC1′s hit music show, Live Amp, hosted the exclusive world premiere of the first video from Driemanskap’s long-awaited second album, ‘Hlala Nam’.

‘Izulu Lelam’ is an epic track with production by Mo Fire Music producer, Khosh, featuring traditional South African choral vocals on the hook and vivid, heart-wrenching lyrics by Driemanskap.

‘Izulu Lelam’, which, translated from isiXhosa, means ‘heaven is mine’, is a song of hope dedicated to anyone going through tough times in life. The message of the song is that one day everyone will be free from the chains of hardship because heaven is a place that doesn’t discriminate between rich or poor, black or white.

The video was directed by Ari Kruger from Sketchbook Studios and features Vincent Ntunja as the wounded warrior. Check out the video, download the track and hit us up in the comments to let us know what you think…

Ewe Nje by Rattex featured in new Halls commercial

October 4, 2012 Media, Music, News, Video No Comments

This is one of the reasons we object to being called an ‘underground’ hip hop label. Sure, we put out music that doesn’t fit the standard pop radio format, but don’t get it twisted, we’re not trying to starve out here!

We recently placed Rattex’s street banger, ‘Ewe Nje’, in a Halls commercial. The track, produced by Hipe, is about how mainstream media has turned its back on real street music, preferring the image-conscious to the conscious. In the hook, Rattex proclaims that, ‘they can try, but they’ll never stop us – for real!’

‘Ewe Nje’ can be found on Rattex’s extended EP, ‘Streets, Raps & Us’. You can order the CD or download the music by visiting our online store.

Bruin Brood by Cream released today | New Music

September 13, 2012 Music, Releases No Comments

Bruin Brood CD Artwork

————————————

Bruin Brood – OUT NOW!

Cream is a product of both the grimy streets of the Cape Flats, and the long tradition of lyrical hip hop in Cape Town. His music is the soundtrack to his trials, tribulations, hopes and ambitions – it’s his passion, his hunger and his salvation.

Cream is first and foremost a lyricist who’s love for the art of hip hop and wordplay is evident on this, his debut album. Cream’s delivery is like an iron fist in a silk glove – his vicious street flows and dark metaphors are balanced by his trademark melodic, ear-pleasing delivery – you’re gonna get slapped silly, but it will feel good!

Cream effortlessly switches between Afrikaans and English, colliding and fusing them together in a lyrical nuclear reaction that is guaranteed to melt concrete.

Bruin Brood, which, literally translated from Afrikaans, means ‘brown bread’ or metaphorically, ‘food for thought’, was produced entirely by legendary Cape Town hip hop icon, Hipe, who is internationally recognised for his soulful, sample-based production. With Hipe on the boards, you know you’re getting timeless classics.

Together, Cream and Hipe are the sound of the streets of Cape Town and Bruin Brood is a certified classic. In Cream’s own words, believe the Hipe!
